Deputies: Motorist hit while removing dead deer from Savannah Hwy.

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Lanes on Savannah Highway have been reopened to traffic after a motorist was hit while attempting to remove a dead deer from the roadway early Wednesday morning, according to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Officials say the accident happened around 6:20 a.m. Wednesday, near the Ponderosa neighborhood.

Deputies say the motorist struck a deer just before the Viaduct on Highway 17 southbound. The victim then attempted to remove the deer from the road when he was hit by a truck.

The victim was wearing dark clothing at the time of the accident, and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, officials say.

Multiple lanes were closed as authorities responded to the accident.

Officials say no one was hurt in the second accident, and the investigation is ongoing.
