BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - The years-long work of widening of U.S. 17 in the Lowcountry is finished.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports that the work widened what was once a deadly two-lane road with tight shoulders. Now U.S. 17 is four lanes all the way from Charleston southwest to Interstate 95.
The last segment was the $175-million widening of 22 miles from Gardens Corner to Jacksonboro. Dozens of people have died along that stretch of road, including three sailors were killed in a bus crash near Gardens Corner in 2004.
