COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Richland County Councilwoman Joyce Dickerson is kicking off her campaign to challenge U.S. Sen. Tim Scott in 2014.
The Democrat said during a news conference Friday that she wanted to be "elected," not "selected" for the position.
Gov. Nikki Haley appointed Scott, a Republican, to serve when Jim DeMint resigned from the Senate earlier this year.
Dickerson is a retired compliance auditor and is the first candidate to challenge Scott. She currently chairs the National Foundation for Women Legislators and is president of the National Order of Women Legislators.
Elected to Richland County Council in 2004, Dickerson said Friday she has worked to ensure the county has reliable public transportation.
