Hilton Head Island man drowns at golf course

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A Hilton Head Island man has drowned after he fell into a pond on a golf course.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reported that 86-year-old Lawrence Monroe Slovin fell into the water while reaching for a golf ball.

Beaufort County sheriff's deputies fell in the water Sunday afternoon at the Country Club of Hilton Head.

A sheriff's report said Slovin had hit his golf ball back onto the fairway from near the water hazard when he spotted another golf ball closer to the water. Slovin's playing partner said Slovin tried to hit the golf ball and lost his footing and fell into the water.

The body has been sent to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for an autopsy.
