It was a very special night at the
Colonial Life Arena Friday.
The University of South Carolina
honored some pioneers of the athletics department, the school's first black
Carolina welcomed its first black
athletes in 1969, six years after the school was integrated.
"It's a wonderful thing,"
said Casey Manning, USC's first African American basketball player. "You're
honored. It's not just for me or Jackie Brown who is not with us any longer and
I miss Jackie Brown or Carlton Haywood, but it's for all the students that were
here back during the days we were in school and it's not just an individual
honor, it's a collective thing, it's for the community, it's for all the
students and for the greater Columbia area and the whole state.
