BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Jefferson County man is in custody after allegedly stabbing his wife to death.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department says they received an alarm call on Sunday around 3 p.m. from the 4800 Block of Longmeadow Lane near McCalla.

When deputies arrived on the scene, a man came to the door saying he had stabbed his wife. Deputies entered the residence and found the victim dead.

The Jefferson County Coroner has identified the victim as 55-year-old Hattie Bell Stokes. Her husband, 58-year-old Isaac James Stokes, is in custody for her murder. Formal charges are expected to be filed against him within 24 hours, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.

Chief Deputy Randy Christian said sheriff's deputies have responded to the home twice in the past year for verbal arguments.
