Ralph Friedgen to Serve as Head Coach for Medal of Honor Bowl

Posted: Updated:

Former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator and former Maryland head coach Ralph Friedgen will serve as head coach for the American Team.

Leading the National Team will be former Buffalo Bills and Dallas Cowboys head coach Chan Gailey.

Considered one of the great offensive minds in football, Friedgen began his coaching career at The Citadel before stints as a key assistant at Maryland and 1990 National Champion Georgia Tech with Coach Bobby Ross.  Friedgen followed Ross to the San Diego Chargers where in 1995 they reached Super Bowl XXIX (and fell to the San Francisco 49ers).  Friedgen was the recipient of the 1999 Frank Broyles Award as top assistant in all of NCAA Division I football.

Friedgen also coached at his alma mater, the University of Maryland, for 10 seasons and finished with a 75-50 record that included five bowl wins and several conference and regional coach of the year awards, including being named the NCAA Division I national coach of the year in 2001.

"This is special because Ralph is one of the great coaches in America," said Medal of Honor Bowl Chairman Tommy McQueeney.  "These future NFL stars will have the opportunity to see a rare combination – a National Championship and Super Bowl coach in action."

"The presence of former NFL and college head coaches is an excellent mixture for the future of this game," said Medal of Honor Bowl Executive Director Brian Woods.

Friedgen is retired from active coaching and is living Charleston area.

The premier all-star event expects to have more than 200 NFL scouts, coaches and general managers in attendance when practices begin on January 6 at The Citadel's Maybank Triplets Practice Facility.

The Medal of Honor Bowl is scheduled for 2 pm on Saturday, January 11.  For player confirmations and news surrounding the game, follow @MOHbowl on Twitter and on Facebook at Facebook.com/MOHbowl or visit www.MOHbowl.com.
