CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a fire inside a women's bathroom at the Medical University of South Carolina Wednesday night was extinguished in large part thanks to the hospitals fire sprinkler system.
According to a release, a fire broke out inside a first floor women's restroom restroom at MUSC's Ashley River Tower located at 25 Courtenay Drive around 8:12 p.m.
Charleston firefighters arrived within four mintues of receiving the call to find the flames were substantially extinguished by the fire sprinkler system in the restroom, the release state.
Officials say the smoke detector in the bathroom activated the building's fire alarm system, which in turn activated one of two sprinklers in the restoom.
An evacuation of the building was not needed, officials say.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
