Fourteen people were arrested and 19 dogs were taken to an animal shelter after authorities busted a dog-fighting operation in Lee County.

The bust happened late Thursday night at a property located at 5165 Spring Hill Road in Rembert, which is near the Lee, Kershaw, and Sumter County lines.

According to SLED, 13 adults and 1 juvenile were taken into custody. Several others escaped into the woods.

Authorities also seized seven vehicles, several firearms and $3,000 in cash.

Investigators say the home is owned by 38-year-old Michael Antonio Ferguson. He faces a felony dog-fighting charge.

"I mean there's just a culture out there that likes to fight dogs," said SLED Chief Mark Keel. "Some people like to watch football games, some people like the sport of dog-fighting. And those that do, we all know what it leads to; it leads to abuse of these animals.  "

The dogs are being cared for at a local shelter and will soon be sent to foster homes.
