CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Charleston International Airport will be one of the busiest places in the Lowcountry this week.

A lot of people will be flying home to see family and friends for Thanksgiving and the airport is in the middle of a huge renovation.

Airport officials say the construction will not affect travelers during the holiday season.

Passengers can hear and feel some of the work being done.

It's all part of the Terminal Redevelopment and Improvement Program also known as "TRIP."

"It's a $189 million project to renovate and expand the Charleston International Airport," said John Connell, Director of Engineering and Planning.

There are a few major features of the project, including a consolidated TSA screening area.

The rental car counters will be moved into a new pavilion on the west end of the building taking on a new look inside and out.

There will also be a 3rd baggage carousel built in the area.

Connell said two of the biggest features will include expanding from 10 to 15 gates as well as renovating the entire interior of the terminal.

Connell said, "We do expect the major changes to start after the 1st of the year. We delayed some of the major interior renovation work to accommodate this major holiday peak season."

Construction is currently scheduled to be done by September of 2015.

Weekly progress of the construction is posted to the airport web site.
