Family and friends honor late coach with charity football game

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Friends and family of former Cross High School assistant coach and Berkeley Alum Antonio Simmons, are honoring his memory through the game he loved most, football.

Thanksgiving morning will mark the inaugural Turkey Bowl, a charity football game featuring Simmons' former teammates and friends, aimed at raising money for the Antonio Simmons Scholarship fund.  Donations from Thursday's game will be awarded to area student-athletes.

"Now when we wake up on Thanksgiving morning we can remember Antonio Simmons and give thanks back and honor him for everything that he's done for those he's left behind," said Derek Middleton, a friend of the former coach.

"It helps me to do something that is worthwhile to help others," added Antonio's mother Deborah Corley.

"That's what Antonio would've wanted."

Simmons died of a heart attack in July, only months after Cross won its first ever state football championship.

The Turkey Bowl will kick off at 10 o'clock Thanksgiving morning at Berkeley High School.
