Charleston Coast Guardsman faces court-martial for sexual assaults

A Coast Guardsman accused of sexual assault and other crimes will face a court-martial Monday in Charleston, according to the United States Coast Guard.

Coast Guard officials say 35-year-old Petty Officer 2nd Class Omar Gomez is charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice for allegedly engaging in sexual misconduct ranging from rape to inappropriate comments, involving two civilians and six Coast Guard women.

Officials say Gomez is also charged with failure to obey a lawful order and regulation, cruelty and maltreatment, false official statement and general articles.

According to officials, an investigation started immediately after a sexual assault aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin on September 16, 2012 and the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star in Settle, W.A. Coast Guard

Officials say Gomez crimes allegedly occurred in Seattle, Honduras, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Charleston, S.C. Gomez was formerly assigned to Gallatin and has been administratively assigned to another unit in the state.

The court-martial will take place at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Charleston.
