Tucson, AZ (Tucson News Now) - The Salpointe Lancers are state football champions. Finally. For the first time in their 62-year history, the Lancers made history, etching their name in the record books by beating Chaparral 46-20.

It looked shaky in the beginning. The Firebirds managed to score first but missed the PAT. It was the first time all season Salpointe had trailed. After that, however, the Lancers got things going scoring 26 unanswered points.

Defense was the name of the game. In the second quarter, Austin Weaver forced a Firebird fumble that Salpointe recovered. Jay Williams took it to the house on the very next play. Later, Salpointe held a goal line stand against Chaparral that resulted in a turnover on downs. That led to Andy Cota hitting Cam Denson for a 98 yard touchdown.

The rest was history.

The Lancers finish the season 14-0. They are just the 9th Tucson high school ever to finish a season undefeated.
