CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Two people recently hospitalized with the flu at the Medical University of South Carolina have died, according to officials.
Tony Cuiffo with MUSC confirms two patients have died as a result of the flu. Both patients were hospitalized last week.
The hospital was not able to give the identity, age or gender of the patients.
A Dorchester County woman died from the flu in early November. Officials say she was the first lab-confirmed, influenza-associated death of the flu season in South Carolina.
According to the Department of Health and Environmental Control, there were 46 flu-related deaths in South Carolina last flu season and 1,720 flu-associated hospitalizations.
State epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell says flu activity typically peaks in February in South Carolina.
