SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Live 5 News investigation has uncovered big crime problems at a small apartment complex in Summerville.
Last Saturday, a man was shot and wounded at the Cambridge Apartments on Orangeburg Road.
Our investigation revealed the shooting was one of more than 60 crime reports filed by residents at the complex so far this year.
The range of crimes include assaults, armed robberies, drugs and shootings.
"That's why it's called a problem area. Yeah, I would say that's too many," said Dorchester County Sheriff L.C. Knight. "What happens in a lot of these apartment complexes, we have a lot of visitors. Visitors bring problems."
A woman named Barbara, who's lived at Cambridge for ten years, says she's not worried.
"Very safe, yes I am. I'm very safe here."
Sheriff Knight says she should feel safe because his deputies spend a lot of time patrolling the complex.
"We've kind of stepped up our patrols in there," he explained.
But the sheriff says the fight against crime at Cambridge won't be won without help from the folks who live there.
"I want the people to help us. I don't know of any way we can change unless we have enough manpower to put a man in there full time, and I don't have that."
The man wounded in the most recent shooting is still in the hospital. Deputies want to talk to him. So far, no suspects have been identified.
