BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Berkeley County man was sentenced Wednesday to 17 years in prison after being convicted of burglary and assault and battery.
Derrick Ladon Clark, 25, was convicted on charges of first-degree burglary, first-degree assault and battery, and unlawful possession of burglary tools during a jury trial Wednesday.
According to a release, Clark broke into the victim's home in the early morning hours of October 20. The victim woke up to find Clark standing in his hallway.
When the victim confronted Clark, officials say the two got into a physical confrontation, resulting in a number of scratches and bruises on the victim's chest, back, and neck.
Clark attempted to run away, but he was chased through the neighborhood by the victim who was able to flag down officers.
The release states Clark admitted he broke into the victim's house using a screwdriver, but claimed he did not intend to steal anything.
Clark must serve 85% of his sentence before he will be eligible for parole.
