Police: Thief attempting to escape officer, taken down by SWAT

MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - Police officials say a thief who was trying to get away from a police officer at a Christmas parade was apprehended by members of a SWAT team.

The Mount Pleasant Police Department arrested 30-year-old Frederick Gathers.

On Sunday night, a police officer assigned to the Mount Pleasant Christmas parade received a report that a concerned citizen saw a man pulling on car handles in the area of Ellis Street and Bellview Avenue.

When the officer arrived in the area, he said he saw Gathers walking closely to several vehicles in the area. According to police, the officer then saw Gathers sit in the driver's seat of a pickup truck where Gathers was seen looking through the vehicle.

The officer said Gathers then left the truck and started walking towards Fairmont Avenue.

A police report states when the officer attempted to stop Gathers, Gathers began running away from the officer.

The officer said when he approached Simmons Street, he saw several SWAT members holding Gathers on the ground.
