Thieves take off with $15k worth of equipment from fire department construction site

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators with the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office are on the lookout for thieves who stole more than $15,000 worth of equipment from a fire department construction site.

Authorities say the equipment was stolen from the site of the new Lady's Island/St. Helena Fire District Headquarters.

The thefts were discovered Wednesday morning, and believed to have happened Tuesday night.

A construction worker told deputies that he arrived at the site around 8 a.m. and noticed that a large amount of copper piping was missing. An incident report states that someone had apparently cut pipes out of the ceilings and walls.

Authorities say another worker noticed that a lock had been cut off and removed from a work trailer. According to the sheriff's office, someone had stolen multiple rolls of wiring, a hammer drill and accessories and extension cords from the trailer.

At this time, no suspect(s) have been identified. The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact either Investigator Cpl. A. Zsamar at 843-255-3408 or Crimestoppers.
