NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - An aerospace giant is getting even bigger.
On Friday, Boeing officials announced access to a total of 468 acres of land through a long-term lease with Palmetto Railways. The company says the acquisition protects potential future growth in South Carolina.
The expansion efforts includes the construction of a paint facility on the North Charleston campus, which is set to begin construction in late 2014. The facility will allow Boeing to paint completed 787's in North Charleston, rather than outsourcing the job to Fort Worth, Texas.
The company will also build a 10,000 square foot fully-equipped fire station at its main campus, beginning in January 2014.
"Our commitment to South Carolina is visibly demonstrated every day as our growth and expansion continues," said Jack Jones, the South Carolina Boeing Vice President and General Manager. "I don't expect that ending anytime soon."
