Two Lincoln County women were charged with stealing mail from mailboxes in a large area of eastern Lincoln County Monday night, investigators say.

Deputies were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call in the area of Old Plank Road and Business Highway 16 around 9:00 p.m., according to a news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.

The Communications Center advised officers that a red Honda was stopping at mailboxes along the road.  Officers spotted the vehicle on Old Plank Road near the intersection of June Dellinger Road on the wrong side of the road and pulled up to a mailbox with emergency flashers on.

Deputies asked the driver if they had been stopping at mailboxes removing mail.  The driver replied "No" and that they were driving around getting familiar with a paper route that she was getting ready to start.

The driver gave consent to search the vehicle and she along with a front seat passenger were asked to step out of the vehicle.

The driver then told deputies she and a friend had been driving around stealing mail looking for money and gift cards because they could not buy Christmas for their kids.
Deputies located a trash bag on the passenger side of the vehicle filled with mail taken from the mailboxes.

Detective Frank Runyon took over the investigation and interviewed the suspects at the Sheriff's Office.  The mother of one of the suspects came to the scene to pick three young children who were in the back seat of the vehicle.

Mail was stolen from approximately 50 mailboxes that included Basin Lane, Burgin Trail, Cabin Lane, Mt. Zion Church Road, Old Plank Road, Fountain Lane, Highway 16, Lowes Lane, South Ingleside Farm Road, Little Egypt Road, and Dayton Lane.

Lyndsay Lee Thacker, 27, of Lincolnton, and Kasey Danielle Turner, 26, of Lincolnton, were charged with one count of misdemeanor larceny.

They were placed in jail under a $10,000 secured bond each.

The incidents have been reported to the U.S. Postal Service.

Additional charges are possible.
