Officials: Student collapsed, taken to hospital after wrestling match


A high school student was taken to the hospital Tuesday after collapsing during a wrestling match in Union County.

According to officials with Mount Pleasant High School, the student was walking back to the bench after a wrestling match at Forest Hills High School when he collapsed.

The student, whose name has not been released, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center – Union after CPR was done at the scene, the Wingate Fire Department told WBTV.

He was later transferred tot he Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte.

There is no word on the student's condition, but firefighters said he had a pulse and was breathing when he was transported to the hospital.

School officials told WBTV that a quick response from the athletic training staff and several parents who are in the medical profession may have helped save the young man's life.
