MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) -

A local shrimper confirms to Live 5 News that his shrimping boat sank overnight Wednesday in Shem Creek.

Rocky Magwood with Magwood Seafood says his boat, Lady Eva, began sinking at the Wando Shrimping Co. Dock. He says he's not sure what caused the boat to sink.

A close friend said Magwood received the call after midnight Wednesday morning.  The boat was never completely submerged, but the majority was underwater.

Coast Guard officials did not have a cause, but suspect there may have been a previous patch that became loose.

Magwood spent most of the day pumping water from the boat, using five high-powered pumps, capable of pumping 2500 gallons per minute.

By dusk, most of the boat was recovered.

Magwood is a 4th generation shrimp captain, providing seafood to businesses throughout the Lowcountry.

A local non-profit is working to organize fundraisers to help the local businessman recover what was lost.
