Gatorade releases Cam Newton comic book in print

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Carolinas Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has been dubbed "Superman," but now the quarterback is becoming a hero of his own, in the form of a comic book.

The comic book, which is a release from Gatorade and DC Comics, features Newton as "The Blender." It started as part of an online series on Gatorade's website called "Freaks."

Now the comic book is being printed in limited numbers for Panthers fans.

Newton is the second NFL star to be drawn into the series. The first was Defensive End JJ Watt from the Houston Texans.

"While creating the comics, the brand wanted to tell the athletes' authentic stories," officials from Gatorade told WBTV. "In order to do that, Gatorade interviewed both JJ Watt and Newton to learn the narratives they wanted to share and to build out those stories together."

In the comic featuring Watt, he explains how he transformed into "Megawatt" by working hard on and off the field starting in high school and continuing today.

"In the one featuring Newton, he tells how he learned from his childhood idols to incorporate their best attributes but not to replicate them," officials told WBTV. "By adapting skills to fit his own game, Newton became 'The Blender,' a multi-faceted athlete who can hurt opponents with his arm, legs and mind."

"The Blender" did really well online, so Gatorade decided to give fans attending Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints their own limited edition comic, in print.

The comic will be passed out before the game at the Panthers Lair, which is located on the corner of Morehead St. and Mint St. and in the Panthers in the Park area.
