Students charged in Berea High, JL Mann bomb threats

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

A teen student has been charged after a bomb threat caused Berea High School to be evacuated on Wednesday, according to the Greenville County Sheriff's Office.

Master Deputy Jonathan Smith said a 15-year-old sophomore at the school was charged after the bomb threat was found written on a bathroom wall. Officers did not find any suspicious device in the school, they said.

The student is charged with conveying false information regarding attempted use of a destructive device, disturbing a school. The student was taken to Greenville County Juvenile Detention Center.

Oby Lyles, Director of Communications for Greenville County Schools released a statement on Thursday that said:

Making a bomb threat is a very serious matter and any student involved will be recommended for expulsion and face criminal charges. School staff and law enforcement are to be commended for their thorough investigation resulting in the identification of the student responsible for the bomb threat. Bomb threats at other schools are being investigated and will be dealt with in a similar manner.

Johnathan Bragg of the Greenville Police Department also announced on Thursday that a 16-year-old female was charged with making a bomb threat at JL Mann high school on Dec. 10. Bragg said the threat was found written on something in the bathroom.

Because of the student's age, their names and photos are not expected to be released.
