Chesterfield Police say leads exhausted in 7-year-old's death

Posted: Updated:
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A Chesterfield family is preparing for their first Christmas without their 7-year-old boy, killed by celebratory gunfire.

Chesterfield Police say they've exhausted all leads in solving Brendon Mackey's death. He was killed on the 4th of July in Brandermill.

The Christmas tree at Mari Harris' home serves as a mini-memorial to a life taken too soon. Mackey's oldest sister put the tree together. One of the ornaments he made hangs at the top, but not having him there is one of the hardest things this family is dealing with.

"We still think about him every single day, ya know? It hasn't gone away. It's still right there," Harris said.

It's been five months since Brendon was shot.  Police knocked on hundreds of doors looking for leads. Seven guns were turned in, but none is a match. They are still looking for a .40 caliber handgun.

Investigators say they're not closing this case, but need help.

"Somebody knows. This person that fired this weapon didn't sneak off into a secluded place on July the 4th and fire their weapon," says Captain Chris Hensley.

Officers maintain the gun was fired within a mile from where Brendon was killed.  Brendon's mom says she's holding onto hope and isn't frustrated with the progress of the case.

"We went into this knowing that the odds were going to be really low in finding the person," she said.

While this family continues to deal with little Brendon's death, his mother says this is not a time to give up.

"I have other children I have to raise and I have to be 100 percent there for them like I was before Brendon passed away," she said.

An anonymous donor gave $5,000 to the reward fund, bringing the total to $9,200 for information leading to an arrest.

Investigators want to remind the public about this case with New Year's Eve coming up and the possibility of celebratory gunfire once again become a major problem.
