(RUSSIA TODAY/CNN) - The man who invented the AK-47 has passed away, according to Russian news agency Itar-Tass.
Mikhail Kalashnikov, who was honored four years ago with Russia's highest order, the hero of Russia, died at age 94.
The weapons designer invented his first machine gun in 1942 while recovering from an injury during World War II.
Five years later he would design the AK-47.
The assault rifle, along with its various modifications, has been recognized in the Guinness World Record book as the most common machine gun worldwide.
