Massive fire breaks out at South Memphis funeral home

(WMC-TV) - A huge fire broke out at a Memphis funeral home early Christmas Eve morning. Firefighters fought massive flames on the 1300 block of Florida Street.

Snow Funeral Home has been in South Memphis since 1957 and in a matter of minutes it went from a thriving business to a charred frame.

Six bodies were inside Snow Funeral Home at the time; five of them were in the embalming room and one was in a casket. Firefighters were able to get all six bodies out of the building before they suffered any damage.

According to neighbors, the fire started with a loud explosion.

"We were watching TV and we heard this loud explosion. And at first we didn't think anything of it, we thought it was a gunshot and as my son got up to look out the window he notices that the funeral home was on fire and at that moment we called 911," said Kathy Pride. "It was burning, it was completely burning. I was just hoping it didn't catch anything else on fire."

Fire investigators are checking to see if a floor furnace may have started the fire, but the official cause remains under investigation.
