Water Missions seeks to bring world clean water

Posted: Updated:
North Charleston, SC (AP) -

After a dozen years, Molly and George Greene are still pursuing their dream of bringing clean drinking water to 100 million people worldwide. And they have made substantial progress.

Since starting Water Missions International in 2001, they estimate the nonprofit based in North Charleston has provided clean water to an estimated 3 million people in 50 nations.

The organization's Living Water Treatment System - an arrangement of a pump and filtering system used to filter for drinking in remote areas - can now be operated by solar power.

Water Missions has a staff of 200 worldwide and a budget of $13 million.

Earlier this year, Water Missions moved into a 43,000-square-foot building at the old Charleston Naval Base powered by solar power.
