MADISONVILLE, KY (WFIE) -

Madisonville city officials are asking residents to speak up so they can raise the money for a new road through the city.

Currently, if you want to travel through downtown Madisonville, you either hop on Main Street or go on the Pennyrile Parkway, but city officials are hoping you the public can help them complete this new road through the city.

city officials recently completed the intersection at East Center Street and Midtown Commons with hopes of this intersection leading to a new road extending from Island Ford Road, running parallel down the Pennyrile Parkway, and ending at East Center Street.

Now, there are two main north to south routes for this area causing congestion during peak travel periods, and officials say this new connector road would decrease the number of accidents in Madisonville.

"It's going to increase economic opportunity. You know that area there between exit 42 and 44 is really the front door of Madisonville, so any development, growth and investment that we see in there is only going to be good for the whole city," Madisonville Mayor David Jackson said.

City officials need the public to call the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and voice their support for the project, so funding for it ends up on the governor's budget for the new year.
