BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A 19-year-old has been charged with felony driving under the influence after deputies say he drove his car off the road Christmas day, severely injuring a passenger.
According to a release, Beaufort County deputies responded to a wreck on Dolphin Head Drive around 11:15 p.m. Officials arrived to find 19-year-old Mathew Zitello sitting beside the road.
Deputies say Zitello's 2005 Infiniti QX was off the road approximately 100 feet into the wood line near Seabrook Drive. The vehicle, which still had a female passenger inside, was severely damaged and had overturned.
The 19-year-old female passenger was trapped inside the vehicle, unconscious, and suffering from life threatening injuries, the report states.
She was air lifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia.
Zitello was arrested by Highway Patrol and charged with felony driving under the influence. His bond was set at $100,000.
