Church burglary suspect arrested

LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A man police believe is responsible for multiple church burglaries earlier in December was arrested Friday night.

Jacob Pigman, 19, of Trinity, was taken into custody after a joint investigation by the Decatur and Trinity police departments and the Limestone County Sheriff's Office, according to the Decatur Police Department.

Police said Pigman is responsible for three of the church burglaries in Decatur: Fairview Baptist Church on Danville Road; St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on Danville Road; and Cedar Ridge Baptist Church on Modaus Road. 

Pigman was charged Friday night by the Decatur Police Department with three counts of third degree burglary. A bond has not been set. 

Investigators still believe a rash of church break-ins in two counties are related.

The latest break-in happened Christmas Eve night at the Round Island Baptist Church on Browns Ferry Road.

Limestone County investigators believe the same person may be responsible for break-ins at East Highland Baptist Church and Newby's Chapel, both on Nick Davis Road, and Lakeview Church on Lucas Ferry Road.

Deputies said there have been four break-ins in Limestone County and five break-ins in Morgan County over the last several weeks.

At Newby's Chapel, Pastor Jerry Foster had some camera equipment swiped. He said he wants the person who did it caught, but he wants to hopefully change their life.

"It's sad, and I pray that whomever did it will repent. We have a forgiving heart, so we pray they have a change of heart and maybe return some of the stuff that was stolen," Foster said.

Investigators said the suspect or suspects in the Limestone and Morgan Counties cases usually broke in through a window, seemingly to look for money, but got away with only a little.

Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said, "We've had a laptop, a lens from a camera, I think a Play Station, and a bag of Jolly Ranchers. I think that's about the extent of what was taken in the four churches we've had broken into."

Decatur police said Friday night that more suspects possibly involved in the other church burglaries are being located.

Decatur police said more arrests are expected.
