James Island alum and former Citadel star Chris McGuiness was traded by the Texas Rangers to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in exchange for Pitcher Miles Mikolas.
McGuiness, who made his major league debut with the Rangers last season, hit .176 with an RBI over the course of his 10 games with the big league club. The rest of his 2013 season was spent with Triple-A Round Rock where he hit .246 with 11 HR's and 63 RBI.
The Lowcountry native had been taken off of Texas' 40 man roster and optioned back down to Triple-A last week when the Rangers signed Shin-Soo Choo.
The Pirates will be the 4th organization the 25 year old has played for since being selected in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. Originally selected by the Boston Red Sox, McGuiness was traded to Texas as part of a trade for Jared Saltalamacchia.
After 2+ seasons with Texas he was selected in the Rule 5 Draft by the Cleveland Indians. He spent Spring Training with the Indians in 2013 but was returned to Texas after he failed to make the 40 man roster.
Over the course of his 5 years in the minors, McGuiness has hit .257 with 62 HR's and 275 RBI. He's expected to compete for a backup spot on the Pirates major league roster.
