Memorial service set for officer in fatal Nov. accident

The Charleston Police Department announced a memorial service will be held next week for an officer who was killed in a motorcycle wreck while off duty in November.

A memorial service for Sergeant Tony Person, Jr. will be held at Summerall Chapel at The Citadel on Thursday, January 9 at 10 a.m.

According to police, the accident took place in the area of Dorchester Road and Trump Street shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, November 16.

Police say a vehicle pulled out into the path of Person, who was off duty. Person swerved in an attempt to miss the Dodge Journey, but struck its rear quarter panel and was then hit by a second vehicle.

Person was pronounced dead as a result of his injuries sustained in the crash.

Charleston Police say Person has served the Lowcountry for 13 years.

PoliceChief Gregory Mullen released this statement:

"The department is in shock from the news about the death of Sergeant Tony Person.  We are mourning the loss of a dedicated police officer, father, and friend who will be dearly missed by everyone.  Tony served the Department and community with honor,dedication, and humility."
