CCSO: Search for inmate leads to dog's death on Johns Island

Posted: Updated:
JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office say a pit bull died as deputies, who were searching for an inmate, attempted to secure the dog.

Investigators say the incident started when deputies traveled to a home on Pondview Road to continue an investigation in locating George Henry Knight, an inmate was mistakenly released from the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Deputies reported that they encountered several loose and aggressive pit bulls at the home on Pondview Road.

Authorities say the Sheriff's Office Animal Control Unit was then requested to respond to the location to secure the pit bulls.

A sheriff's office report states that in an effort to secure the pit bulls with a catch pole, one of the dogs died in the process. As a result of this incident, sheriff's office officials say they will be conducting an administrative investigation in to the circumstances surrounding the death of the dog.

George Henry Knight was not located at the home.
