Child rescued after being trapped in Acworth

A teenager has been rescued in Cherokee County after being trapped in a mobile home.

The 14-year-old was trapped at Poplar Valley Mobile Home Park on Hwy 92.

A tree fell on the mobile home due to strong winds moving through Metro Atlanta during a thunderstorm.

Rescuers did not rush the operation, explaining the tree could become unstable if they did not secure it prior to extracting the teen.

Firefighters used an airbag to lift the tree off of the girl, once it was secured.

The tree itself sliced through the thin skin of the mobile home, like a warm knife through butter.

Several family members were not home at the time of the freak accident, including the girls parents.

Her mother was running an errand and her father, Oscar Ruiz, was on his way to work when he got a phone call about what happened.

Both parents returned home to find rescuers on scene. According to Ruiz, seeing the damage the tree had caused, and knowing his daughter was trapped under it, felt like the world was ending for him.

His fears and feelings of helplessness were put to rest when firefighters were able to safely get the girl out of the home.
