Two people charged following death of horse

Posted: Updated:

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - An arrest warrant has been issued for two individuals following the death of a 14-year-old thoroughbred named Major.

Keith Rabon, a 37-year-old local farrier, is charged with breaking the county ordinance of animal care and treatment. Colby Sessions, 19, is also charged with the same crime. Sessions allegedly had the horse prior to Keith Rabon selling it to the Sylvester family.

They believe Rabon is responsible for the animal's demise.

Patricia Sylvester purchased Major through a second party from Rabon two days before the animal died of malnourishment on December 30. Sylvester says she and her family were hoping to nurse the horse back to health, but they never got the chance.

"From the info that we have gotten from hundreds of people that have known major personally, from the time he left the barn to the time he got to Keith, he was fit, healthy and happy, so there are four months unaccounted for," said Patricia Sylvester.

The Sylvesters say they were hoping for a more stringent charge, like a state felony but officials say breaking the county ordinance is all the investigation turned up. Both men will go before a judge to answer for the offense. The sheriff's office says they have been in contact with both men and are making arrangement for them to turn themselves in.

"These particular charges are county ordinances which are put on the books by Horry county government so they can be put on the books by magistrate court to not exceed 30 days in jail or a fine of $1092.50," says Sgt. Jeff Benton.

Some good has come of the tragedy. The Major Fund has been set up by the Myrtle Beach Equine Clinic to help horse owners having a difficult time taking care of their animals. So far, $335 has been raised.
