BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities a Berkeley County man is behind bars Friday for five counts of tax evasion and one count of failure to file an individual income tax return.

Investigators with the South Carolina Department of Revenue say 45-year old Thomas Smith of Bonneau earned income for tax years 2005 through 2010 which required him by law to file income tax returns.

Investigators say Smith claimed exempt status for his withholding allowance for the period and had little to no income withheld from his pay.

According to authorities Smith has an outstanding state tax liability of $11,724 and could face up to $60,000 in fines and up to 26 years in prison.
