Suspect sought for car fire outside W. Ashley apartment complex

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Investigators are searching for the person responsible for setting a car on fire outside an apartment complex in West Ashley.

On Friday at 4:28 a.m., Charleston police officers responded to an apartment complex on Orange Branch Road in reference to a car fire. Officers then arrived at the location and helped fire department crews extinguish the vehicle fire.

A witness told officers he heard a car alarm go off around 4:15 a.m.. The witness then looked outside and saw that the alarm was coming from a Dodge Durango SUV parked across from his home.

Police say the vehicle alarm then reset, but went off a few minutes later.

According to police, when the witness looked outside this time, he saw a dark colored older model sedan parked in front of the SUV. The witness reported that the sedan fled the scene with its lights turned off.

Police say several seconds later, the witness heard an explosion and saw the rear of the SUV was engulfed in flames.
