Lowcountry volunteer celebrates Mentoring Month by being there

Posted: Updated:
WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) -
Melissa Young wasn't sure she'd have the time.

Or the answers.

After volunteering with local outreach program, Be a Mentor for the past year, Young says she couldn't have made a better decision.

"I'm wondering if I'm getting all the benefits because she's so much fun to be with," she said.

Young, who was recently named Mentor of the Month, has been spending time with 10-year-old Heaven Foster at The St. Andrews School of Math and Science.

"I just want to be an ear for her."

According to a national survey by Hart Research Associates, young adults with a positive role model in their lives are more likely to enroll in college, hold a leadership position, or volunteer in their community.

"I remember how frustrating childhood was in a lot of ways," Young said.

"Now that I'm an adult I have perspective on so many life lessons that I've learned.  I want to be able to pass that on to her.  I feel like it's my responsibility to show her those things."

January is National Mentoring Month, a campaign that started in 2002.  For more information on the Lowcountry program, Be a Mentor, visit Beamentornow.org.
