CofC's Heidt, Murray Named To Baseball Preseason All-CAA Team
College of Charleston's Gunnar Heidt and Brandon Murray were named to the baseball Preseason All-CAA team, as voted on by the conference's coaches.
The two Cougar standouts were part of the 13-player team that featured representatives of five of the league's schools.
A senior from Nassau, Bahamas, Murray was an All-SoCon Second Team honoree each of the last two seasons. Last season, he hit .306 with nine home runs and finished sixth in the conference with 54 RBI. His biggest game of the year came at Davidson where he had a school-record nine RBIs via a two-run double, a three-run homer and a grand slam, earning him Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors.
CofC's junior shortstop from Murrells Inlet, S.C., earned CAA honors after leading the Cougars with a .349 batting average last season. Heidt was the SoCon Player of the Month last March and finished with 54 RBIs, ranking sixth in the SoCon. He recorded a team-high 17 doubles and a SoCon-best seven triples for a slugging percentage of .534. His speed on the base paths also helped him lead the team in stolen bases (13).
College of Charleston sophomore slugger Carl Wise, a Freshman All-American last season, was tabbed in the Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention list. Wise led the team with 10 home runs and posted 30 RBIs.
College of Charleston was recently picked second in the CAA Preseason Coaches Poll, right behind defending conference champion and regional rival UNCW. Charleston returns nearly all of its offensive production from last year with eight of nine position starters back, and seven of the top eight hitters by batting average.
James Madison junior outfielder Chad Carroll and Towson senior designated hitter Kurt Wertz, who both received preseason All-America accolades, were chosen as the CAA baseball preseason Co-Players of the Year.
UNCW and William & Mary each had a league-high four players voted to the preseason All-CAA baseball team.
The CAA is coming off one of its best baseball seasons ever as three teams received NCAA Tournament berths for the first time since 2001 and seven teams reached the 30-win mark for the first time in league history. The league ranked ninth in overall RPI according to WarrenNolan.com.
