The South Carolina Stingrays (28-10-1-2) toppled the Florida Everblades (22-13-1-2) 4-1 in front of a Stingrays single-game record crowd of 10,617 on Pack the House Night at the North Charleston Coliseum Saturday evening.
Defenseman Derrick Pallis kicked off the scoring with his first goal as a Stingray on the power play at 8:21 of the first period blasting a shot under the blocker of Everblades goaltender Riku Helenius (L, 22 saves on 24 shots) from the left-wing point. Defenseman Drew Baker and forward Lindsay Sparks added assists.
The Stingrays claimed a 2-0 lead on the man advantage 32 seconds into the final frame when forward Peter Boyd rifled a shot over the blocker of Helenius from the right-wing circle. Pallis grabbed the only assist. The Everblades jumped on the scoreboard with a power-play goal of their own at 12:14 when defenseman Joe Stejskal slipped a tally past Stingrays netminder Jeff Jakaitis (W, 30 saves on 31 shots).
Back on the power play late in the period, the Everblades pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker, but forward Patrick Gaul intercepted a pass a fired in an unassisted shorthanded empty-net marker at 17:56 to make it 3-1. Forward Wayne Simpson sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 44 seconds to play. The Stingrays finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play while the Everblades went 1-for-6.
