Southwest GA gears up for possible frozen rain

TIFT CO., GA (WALB) -

As sleet and potential snow approaches our area, safe driving is the top concern for Tift County EMA Director Jason Jones.

"Anytime you have rain or freezing weather conditions, the opportunity for ice on the road ways is certainly there. That's going to be our main threat just a little bit of ice on the roadway," Jones said.

He feels they are prepared for the impending conditions. "We have sand spreaders that they've got staged and ready to go should we need to put some sand out on road ways or bridges or things of that nature, really we are just monitoring the weather, ready to deal with whatever comes our way."

But that isn't the only concern.  "If we do have some freezing rain, that could lead to some power outages as it puts some strain on our utility lines, both the city and the county public works departments they're on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so they will be able to fix any of those problems."

While some might go without power, he says that some facilities will be able to keep their lights on.  "There are backup generators at critical facilities, the 911 center, Tift Regional hospital, our EMS stations has backup generators."

In case it gets too cold, or there is a power outage, the neighborhood service center will be open for all those in need.

"As a precaution one of the things we have done is open up a warming facility, it will be open from noon on Tuesday through noon on Thursday," Jones said.

Jordan says Tifton does have some experience dealing with cold weather from the last cold snap but the new element of possible freezing rain and sleet will be an added challenge.
