Airlines cancel southern flights

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

The wintry blast that's bringing snow and ice to the deep south prompted airlines to cancel more than 2,800 flights Tuesday.

More than 850 of those flights were scheduled to depart from or arrive at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. That's 36 percent of the airport's scheduled flights.

Many of those flights are to and from other southern cities that are not accustomed to handling snow and ice. The cancellations caused some passengers to scramble to book earlier flights.

James Gordon is trying to get back to Norfolk, VA.

"I was supposed to have a nice, late flight, but I had to wake up earlier and actually get here today," said Gordon. "I'm here a few hours earlier, but at least I'm in town."

Harriet Keith and her husband are trying to get to a cruise ship that's scheduled to leave from Rio de Janeiro. They took an earlier flight from Charleston to Atlanta Tuesday to avoid the possibility that their original flight would be canceled. They couldn't help but worry about whether the next leg of their trip would be canceled.

"Oh yeah, you look at the arrival and departure boards, and it's just one cancellation after the other, said Keith.
