Albany Police: Stay off the roads

Posted: Updated:
ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police Chief John Proctor says stay off roadways if possible during freezing weather as it comes into South Georgia.

Unless there is an urgent reason for you to be driving, when you get home tonight, first responders and emergency management are urging you to stay at home.

In a statement, Proctor said, "Over the next couple of days, we will be experiencing some extremely cold temperatures. There is a chance of rain and sleet in the forecast which can lead to icy conditions on the roadways. And the best advice for driving during icy winter weather is not to drive at all, if you can avoid it. So please keep all weather precautions in mind. If you can, stay home and stay warm."

12 ways to stay safe in the cold

Besides the danger that your car or another could hit ice and skid and slide, there is also the danger of ice bringing down tree limbs and power lines.

In the dark you might not see them, and on the ice your car might not be able to stop because of that ice.

This ice could stay with us through tomorrow into Thursday morning.
