SCCPSS release early for winter weather

Schools all over the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry clearly have been impacted by this winter weather.

Most students in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools were thrilled to be getting out of school early to possibly play in the snow.

Nearly 1,000 students were released from West Chatham Middle School around 1:15 p.m., an hour and a half earlier than normal.

Parents lined up around the building to pick up their children and many of them were relieved with the district's decision to cancel school.

"It's pretty good so we can get our kids and so we don't have to drive on the road," said parent Susan Covington. "I don't want to cause any kind of accident or anything like that."

"I don't know if they are building it up to where it's more than what it's going to be but you're never too safe," said grandparent Oscar Criswell.

Some working parents are relieved that even their employers are also closing because they will be able to stay home with their children.

"I'd rather it snow than not snow, at least I'm home for a reason," said parent Billie Betterton. "You know and their home for a reason, if nothing happens than all of this was for no reason."

SCCPSS are closed Wednesday. School officials say they will continue to monitor the weather in case they need to make additional cancelations.
