SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

Tesla Motors, the California-based automaker of the Model S electric sedan, officially opened its supercharger station at the Savannah-Hilton Head International airport Tuesday.

It is the state's first Tesla station and it's meant to help drivers make long trips.

"We're really excited about it because this is another step in helping us connect I-95 drivers from Boston all the way to Miami," said Tesla Motor's Patrick Jones. "They can pull in, use these charging stations 24/7 and they're free to use."

Drivers will be able to travel for about three hours, charge for as little as 20 to 30 minutes while they grab a quick bite to eat, and get back on the road with almost a full charge.

Tesla superchargers have powered Model S cars with nearly eight million miles of range, saving nearly 300,000 gallons of fuel.
