THOMAS COUNTY, GA (WALB) -

The scholarship that has helped to pave the way for numerous health care professionals is now accepting applications.

The Auxiliary Volunteer scholarship is raised through Archbold hospital gift shop sales.Applicants for the state scholarship applicants must apply by February 10th, the deadline for the local scholarship is March 1st.

Recipients are required to go through an interviewing process, they must be pursuing health care as a career, graduating from high school or already enrolled in a college or university program. Scholarship hopefuls must have a 3.0 grade point average, and letters of recommendation are required from counselors. The scholarship award ranges from $500 to $1500.

The director of volunteer services says the scholarship has awarded more than half a million dollars, and has helped to launch many medical careers,"students actually start with us their freshman year of college and receive our scholarship all the way through medical school so we feel that we have participated in the making of some doctors that practice medicine locally," said Michelle Collins.

Counselors at area high schools are given applications for the scholarship, but you can also pick them up at the John D. Archbold Memorial hospital information desk.
