Crews clear up accident on Ravenel Bridge following Friday traffic delays

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Emergency crews have cleared a Friday night accident on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge following a day of traffic delays.

Around 7:45 p.m., crews cleared an accident which had shut down the middle northbound lane of the bridge.

Earlier in the day, motorists were having to traverse through congested traffic along areas of I-526, I-26 and Savannah Highway, and later the Ravenel Bridge, which opened Friday afternoon.

The Ravenel Bridge had been shut down earlier on Friday because chunks of ice were falling from the cables. On Thursday, traffic issues caused headaches for drivers all over the roads, caused mostly because the Ravenel Bridge was closed and because of icy road conditions.

Police received several reports of sheets of ice falling from the bridge and damaging cars. According to dispatch, one person driving across the bridge was injured when a chunk of ice shattered their windshield, sending glass into their eye.

This is the second time the Ravenel Bridge has been shut down this week. It was previously closed Tuesday around 8 p.m. and remained closed until Thursday around 3 p.m.
