Heavy traffic causing major delays on I-526, I-26

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Traffic is moving slowly along I-526 and I-26 after the closing of the Arthur Ravenel Bridge Friday morning.

The Ravenel Bridge was shut down around 10:30 a.m. Friday, forcing motorists to use I-526 and the Don Holt Bridge as an alternate route.

SCDOT cameras show major delays along I-526 in the area of the Don Holt Bridge, and on I-26 westbound from the Cosgrove Road exit 216up to the I-526 interchange.

On I-526 westbound, traffic is backed up from Mt. Pleasant to the Don Holt Bridge, while eastbound traffic is moving slowly from International Blvd. to the Don Holt.

The Ravenel Bridge was shut down Friday because chunks of ice falling from the cables. On Thursday, traffic issues caused headaches for drivers all over the roads, caused mostly because the Ravenel Bridge was closed and because of icy road conditions.

Ice on the roads is not a concern Friday, however, the additional cars as a result of the Ravenel Bridge closure is causing additional traffic issues.

Police received several reports of sheets of ice falling from the bridge and damaging cars. According to dispatch, one person driving across the bridge was injured when a chunk of ice shattered their windshield, sending glass into their eye.

It is unknown at this time when the Ravenel Bridge will be reopen, so motorist can continue to expect delays on I-526.

This is the second time the Ravenel Bridge has been shut down this week. It was previously closed Tuesday around 8 p.m. and remained closed until Thursday around 3 p.m.
