Multiple storage units burglarized in Augusta

Men breaking into Gate 5 Self-Storage Men breaking into Gate 5 Self-Storage
HEPHZIBAH, GA (WFXG) -

After a rash of self storage burglaries, the owner of the facility broken into most recently is fed up. WFXG's Traci Washington found out what he's doing to help catch the crooks.

In the surveillance video, you can see two men walking through Gate 5 self Storage facility after they cut through the fence. It didn't take long for them to figure out they were on camera. After a few seconds the men cut the camera's wires and the screen goes black. Max Vallotton, owner of Gate 5 storage, says he's had enough.

"Who has worked hard for their stuff. Its not my stuff they're taking, its my tenants. And that's what I'm tired of," said Vollotton.

For two hours the two men ransacked 18 storage units, using bolt cutters to get past the padded locks. Just weeks before, two other self storage facilities, less than 10 minutes from Gate 5 storage, were burglarized. Vallotton had a feeling he'd be targeted next.

"Once they hit a few, they keep on going and I actually prepared my managers and said we will probably be broken into," Vallotton told WFXG.

"We work feverishly trying to locate their property and bring the suspects in," said Richmond County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Shane Mcdaniel.

Sgt. McDaniel said these criminals are stealing from hardworking people AND service members.

"On tobacco road, I would say 90 to 99 percent are occupied by our military," said Sgt. Mcdaniel.
"It disgusts me. Its not just my military customers, its everybody," Vollotton admitted.

So he put up half of the reward money.
Deputies say if you're using self storage, be prepared and protect yourself.

"Take inventory of everything that you've got Take pictures of everything you store," said Mcdaniel.

Law enforcement also recommends that tenants record serial and model numbers of all electronics that are placed in storage.

The Richmond County Sheriff's office and Gate 5 Self-Storage are offering a $1,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the suspects responsible for the crime. If you have any information, please contact the Richmond County Sheriff's Office at (706) 821 - 1020.
